Atrip to the supermarket is all you need to know that Christmas is in full swing. Gingerbread graces the shelves, mulled wine is once again finding itself on café menus, and Christmas markets are up and bustling.
The joys of Christmas – so we see – aren’t only to be reserved for the 25th December. Festive dining with loved ones (arguably the best part of the season) too can be enjoyed well before Christmas Day. Whether pre-Christmas feasts with friends or Sunday dinners for each Advent, setting your table for the season is all part of the fun.
Christmas Table Decoration Ideas
While many will engage in extended discussions over the best sides to Christmas dinners (roast potatoes is the unequivocal correct answer), there one thing on which we can all agree: the dining table must look festive.
But what kind of festive? Well, that’s up for discussion. Here’s a little inspiration on how to decorate your Christmas table. Stylists’ hint: stick to a colour theme, and all will fall into place. Happy decorating!
1. A Scandi Yuletide
The most recognisable Christmas colours are red, green and gold, which together make for a merry atmosphere for the Christmas table. These hues, peppered around the dinner table against a white tablecloth, can make for a distinctly Scandinavian look. Red especially has longstanding place in Swedish culture and tradition, recalling the country’s quaint red houses and the typical Falu red. When used sparingly with green and gold, you’re bound to create a joyful, Christmassy atmosphere that your guests are sure to remember.

2. A Fancy Noël
If you prefer classic, more formal settings, dial up the fancy factor with beautiful crockery in ceramic and serveware made from natural stone. Marble table accessories, gold-rimmed plate sets and oversized platters transpire a grand, fancy affair. Stick to a neutral colour scheme by layering on charcoal, cream or beige table linens. This will keep the setting refined and tasteful, and avoid the table looking like opulence overdone.

3. A romantic Christmas
Another classic Christmas colour combination, though less prolific, is silver, blue and white. Recalling snowy, wintery landscapes and star-filled skies, the colour scheme creates a special, romantic atmosphere. To adopt the theme at your festive table, start with a crisp, snow-white tablecloth and accent with napkins and place mats in shades of blue. Silverware and crystal glassware match perfectly, while silver and crystal decorations add a little spark.
