Warm blankets for winter – find your ideal cover-up

As Jane Austen wisely said in Emma, “there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort”. Lounging around at home is obviously the best way to survive winter - we're sure we needn't preech here. But how exactly we define comfort varies from person to person. The subjectivity of taste doesn’t only influence the way we style our home aesthetically, but how we choose to fit it out according to touch and feel. Alpaca, mohair, cashmere and merino wool all make incredibly warm blankets for winter are all natural fibres, but each one possesses its own special trait. Find out which one is best suited for you and for your home when the cold kicks in.

The best blankets for winter are made from...

Wool

Wait, aren’t all animal fibres considered wool? Fur and hair aside, fibres sourced from sheep, goats, alpacas and rabbits technically all fall into the wool category. But when we say wool (as opposed to cashmere or mohair), we mean the real woolly deal – the robust fibre that is shorn from lambs and sheep. Whether you prefer the soft fleece of the Merino sheep, or the Gotland sheep’s long, fine fleece, you can count on a wool blanket as a good all-rounder for every room.

Ideal for: Withstanding wear and tear, keeping on the end of the bed as an extra warm top layer, using as picnic blanket in summer.

Mohair

Sourced from the long, silky curls of the Angora goat, mohair’s uniquely soft, fluffy texture is what makes this versatile fibre so lovable. It’s also why you usually find mohair is blended with other materials – the contrasting, robust fibres provide a base for the superfine mohair yarn pile to be woven with. Cool in summer and warm in winter, mohair’s strikingly soft finish feels comforting against the skin, and won't irritate or itch. As the fibre absorbs dye beautifully, many mohair blankets are also designed in bright, eye-catching colours, making them wonderful blankets for winter because they'll help add a splash of colour to grey days.

Ideal for: Draping over your favourite sofa, dressing up the guest bedroom, wrapping yourself up in after a hot bath.

Alpaca

Alpaca blankets are soft and hard-wearing. Possibly one of the cutest animals out there, the long-haired South American alpaca is renowned for its gorgeous woolly coat. The distinctive combination of silky softness and robust durability is what makes alpaca fleece perfect for home furnishings – it is able to withstand lots of tactile love (super durable) without feeling like a heavy-duty item (it's very soft and light). A favourable fibre for allergy sufferers, alpaca wool is lanolin-free and hypoallergenic, with a low prickle factor that makes it soft and safe for the whole family.

Ideal for: Sharing with the kids on movie night, taking on the plane as a travel blanket, wearing an oversized throw on chilly nights.

Cashmere

The ultimate luxe fibre, cashmere blankets rate high in the softness stakes. Smooth, downy and super-fine, this special wool is more costly than other fibres simply because of the effort involved in generating the raw material. Annual production of wool per cashmere goat is approximately 150 grams, sourced from the softest part underneath the chin during natural shedding. Primarily sourced from Inner Mongolia – where temperatures can hit as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius – cashmere is over eight times warmer than standard wools with a fraction of the weight, making it the warmest winter blanket for its weight. When cared for correctly, it will last you a lifetime - meaning that it's an investment that really does keep on giving.

Ideal for: Giving to your favourite couple as a wedding or anniversary gift, an investment piece for your first home, a reward or indulgence for a special occasion (which might very well be 'because I deserve it').
