Merino Wool

Origins

Merino wool comes from the Merino breed of sheep; it originated in Spain and is noted for its soft, fine, very curly and short staple wool. The fibreʼs fineness can range from 14.5 micrometres to 23.5 micrometres (human hair is 30 micrometres). This high-quality wool is usually used in blankets, bedspreads and clothing.

Properties and qualities

Merino wool is a good insulator as well as being excellent at regulating body temperature, providing warmth without overheating the wearer and drawing moisture away from the skin. The fabric is also slightly moisture repellent allowing the user to avoid the feeling of wetness.

Merino wool naturally resists flames and has hypoallergenic properties making it an ideal choice for those with allergies or sensitive skin. Due to its natural elasticity, Merino wool can be stretched without it losing its shape.

How does it feel?

Merino wool is incredibly soft as a result of the fineness of the fibres.

Care

Merino wool items shouldn’t need to be washed frequently due to a natural protective layer that resists stains and odours. However should Merino wool items need to be cleaned, they should ideally be dry cleaned although they can also be washed on a delicate cycle with a specific wool detergent. For best results, refer to the care instructions on your merino wool product.
